Kagiso Asset Management | October 2019

I was commissioned by the design company, Kite to produce some illustrations for the October 2019 edition of Kagiso Asset Management's quarterly magazine, Up.   

 

The brief required the illustrations to be inspired by the style of Ernst Haeckel and the use of green and russet colours. The designers and me were given clear instructions on what and how each illustration should include. I was given more freedom for the cover artwork, which had to depict algae.   

 

I wanted to create a very stylized look, as Haeckel often arranged his specimens in a symmetrical fashion and illustrated them in sometimes  very unnatural, yet aesthetically beautiful compositions. The use of a strong outline emphasised this stylization, which I softened with the use of watercolour washes.
